Part 2: What is Buddhism

This is a golden statue of the Buddha.
By Antoinette Durand

There are 500 million Buddhists total, but 99% of them live in the Asia-Pacific region. You might know something about mindfulness meditation or reincarnation, but not much else.

Buddha means "awakened one" in Sanskrit. The Buddha was born fabulously rich. He was born Siddhartha Gautama in about 567  BCE in modern day Nepaul. Gautama gave up all his riches to seek the meaning of life. He meditated under a Bodhi tree for 40 days in a row. After those 40 days, he achieved nirvana, or the ultimate form of enlightenment. For the rest of his life, he taught students of nirvana.

COVID-19 is Real

By Rosey Flocke

We all want it to end. Some people think that the only reason we are under lock down is because of the presidential election. That is not true. Americans and thousands of other people are fighting for their lives against this virus. Brian Lee Hitchens said “We thought the government was using it to distract us, or it was to do with 5G. So we didn’t follow the rules or seek help sooner.” Brian’s wife is fighting for her life in a hospital bed in Florida, and she is on a ventilator.

Even though Bryan's wife is critically ill, they both now have covid and are using tools to help them breathe. He and many other people are sick. COVID-19 is real, and there is no escaping it. That's the reality that it’s our duty as citizens of the world to accept.

I am sure you have all heard about hydroxychloroquine. According to FDB (First Databank), it's an immunosuppressive and an anti-parasite drug. Because of miss information, a couple tried it. Their names are gary and wanda. Gary died and Wanda was hospitalized. You should not take hydroxychloroquine unless a doctor prescribes it to you. Hundreds of people died from a viral rumor about its curative effects.

Sleep Hygiene

By Antoinette Durand

During this pandemic, I've found myself falling asleep at 2 AM and waking up at 9 AM. That's not great sleep hygiene. Going back to normal life is going to be hard because I need to get up at 6 AM for my commute. Without structure, sometimes sleep hygiene is thrown out the window.

Going to bed at the same time develops a routine. You'll eventually get used to being in bed at a normal time. During weekdays, I try not to be up later than 11:00 to get a good 7 hours of sleep. That's the amount of sleep that works for me. You might need to adjust your bedtime to get the sleep you need.

Having your bedroom the way you want it is important. Having it too hot or cold can make it hard to sleep. Make sure it's dark in your room. This includes not being on your phone before bed. Infact, you shouldn't have electronics in your room at all. You could be distracted by texts and alerts.

Having alcohol, food, or caffeine near bedtime isn't a part of good sleep hygiene. You should also try to take a walk or get some exercise before bed.

If you try these tips, you'll see your sleep improve. You can find more information on sleep hygiene from the CDC (where I got my information) or Volume 2 Issue 17.
