Phillip Collin’s Guide to Autograph Collecting
I’ve been collecting autographs for a couple years now and it’s a fun and worthwhile experience. Although there are many downsides to autograph collecting (waiting, printed/fake signatures, return to sender occurrences), it’s a super cool hobby I highly recommend trying.
But before you begin writing letters and attending comic-cons, you need to know there’s 2 types of autograph collecting: the writing form (letters & responses), and the “in-person” form (receiving an autograph in-person). I’ve attempted both, and it turns out they’re both enjoyable and satisfying to do.
Let’s begin by talking about the writing form. The first letter I wrote was to former president Barack Obama. It took a few months, but he ended up responding and I received autographs from him! I think the writing form is more challenging to accomplish because the wait could potentially last 5-6 months and you don’t know if the signature is authentic. If you end up writing to someone famous and receive a response, visit this website (https://www.psacard.com/services/autographauthentication) to get your autograph authenticated. You have to follow certain instructions, but I suggest giving it a shot.
Now let’s talk about the “in-person” form. I believe this agenda is much easier than the writing agenda, since you get your autograph signed right in front of you and it’s already authenticated. Celebrities often visit comic-cons, which you can go to. Of course, you’ll have to pay money to attend, but it’s exciting and often filled with entertainment. You can visit these websites for more information (https://www.newyorkcomiccon.com & https://www.comic-con.org/). Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, most conventions have been canceled or postponed, so you may have to wait to purchase tickets.
I hope this brief guide helps you on your autograph voyage. Happy collecting!
