Book Review: On the Come Up

By Antoinette Durand

On the Come Up is Angie Thomas’ second book after The Hate U Give (see Vol.1 Iss.3). On the Come Up takes place in the neighborhood, Garden Heights.

Bri Jackson isn’t going to Garden High. They don’t care. Even if she’s singled out at Midtown Highschool for being ‘aggressive’. She has friends, Sonny and Malik. Bri also has a dream, to be a rapper. Recently, a rapper from the Garden got a million dollar deal. Bri sees this as her chance to make it. Her Aunt Pooh arranges for a song to be recorded. Not only does Bri’s song ‘make it’, it starts a social revolt. It’s only been a year since the riots because of the death of Khalil in The Hate U Give, and people are still mad. The song On the Come Up may change things for African American students at Midtown. Bri wants to help her family get money to keep the heat on. Can she do both, or even one?

D.I.Y Home Decor!

By Ember Hernandez

We’re all stuck inside, so why not make your room more cozy with these tips?

Does your room have crevices you can snuggle in? Grab a few pillows and blankets to make a soft little hideaway!

Do you love books? On your bookshelf, you can display books on each shelf to give a library feel!

Plants always make a room look comfy. I recommend succulents. They need low sunlight and minimal care.

If you have photos around, get some clothespins and a thick string of yarn. Clip the pins over the string, then the paper. Do this multiple times, and you’ll have a line of photos! You can hang them up wherever.

The last thing you could do is play some music in your house! Music helps with coping. I have a radio and speakers in my room. It helps when I want to relax.

The Ibex

By Antoinette and Michelle Durand

Ibex are related to sheep, bison, goats, and antelopes. They live in Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Their horns can grow to be over five feet long. Leopards, humans, eagles, and bearded vultures hunt them. Ibexes themselves are herbivores.

Parts Five and Six: A Jellyfish Journey

By Antoinette Durand

Jellyfish can live 3,800 ft. below the water, or right on the shore of a beach. Some beaches have to shut down because of too many jellyfish on the coast. This happens usually in the summer. Jellies can live in freshwater, too. Warm water, cold water, it doesn’t matter to a jellyfish.

Some jellies, such as blue blubber jellyfish and red cross jellyfish only live a year. There is a special type of jellyfish, the turritopsis dohrnii or the immortal jellyfish that truly can live forever. This death-avoiding jellyfish is the only animal known today that can be classified as immortal, but this jellie’s secret to endless life isn’t a magic potion. First, the jellyfish is born, it lives a life, then, when a normal jellyfish would die, it gets younger. Once it’s back into its polyp stage, it ages again. Medusas can do this not once, but many times. True to its name, this creature never dies of old age, but death can occur if severe illness is present. Turritopsis dohrnii can die if eaten by a predator.
