Music Report

Music is a great way to get through tough times. I recommend the Beatles, more specifically, Fixing a Hole in their album Sargent Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Movie Review

I recommend The Twilight Zone, a creepy, but fun show. It’s from the sixties, so it’s black and white. They have some really interesting episodes about human psychology. They really make you think.

The Twilight Zone is rated PG-14, but not because of language or violence. There is a very significant amount of smoking, even though it’s not promoted by the stories. It is scary, even though it seems old, it’s really eerie. I don’t totally recommend The Twilight Zone to siblings younger than eight. You know them best, but they might not be able to handle it. Otherwise, they’re great short stories that make you think about humans and the way they work.

Advice Column

Siblings are so hard to be around. Even though my sister, Genna, is a reporter here and companion she is difficult. Especially now that we don’t get a break from them, it’s important to have an outlet to express yourself. Art is a great way to do that.

Knitting and crocheting are uncommon arts that people need to do more. You can buy yarn almost anywhere, needles, too.

Embroidery and sewing are a cheap, easy, and fun way to make things that are practical around the home.

Drawing and painting are also good ways to release stress and anxiety that seem normal to us now. Canvas isn’t hard to come by, paint and pencils you can probably find in your home.

Book Review

By Antoinette Durand

The Giver is a powerful book that I recommend to everyone. It’s about twelve year old Jonas in a futuristic society where there are no choices, only rules. When a person turns twelve, they are assigned their job to contribute to society. Jonas is special, and given a strange job with strange new rules. Jonas learns new truths and has to decide where his loyalty lies.

Isolation and Loneliness: Installment One

By Antoinette Durand

Note:

This article will come out in three sections.

How Isolation Affects Children

“Kids need peers,” said professor of human development and quantitative methodology, Kenneth Rubin. “One of the things about being stuck at home as a little kid is that you might not experience these essential interactive experiences that lead to the development of close relationships outside of the family.” Loneliness affects all children differently because “some are more susceptible than others.”

1 in 5 children are obese, and that rate has been climbing for years. Not exercising and a bad diet are two main factors of becoming overweight. Our schools aren’t providing nutritious lunches, and we need to change that. We need healthier school lunches.

The quality of our school lunches is awful. There've been reports of wilted lettuce, moldy broccoli, expired milk, and pools of grease under the taco meat, but that’s just the start. There was chicken in the salad that lunch monitors said not to eat, and we didn’t get fruit from OSCAR, because the quality was so poor. I’ve heard of hotdogs with mold on them, and the combinations of food are just as bad. Pancakes and tater tots? That’s too many carbohydrates, not to mention pizza sticks with mashed potatoes or chicken alfredo.

We are very aware of childhood obesity, in fact, there are special classes so students can try to be healthier, but this isn’t enough. According to Sophie Stuebinger, the Food Service Director, the tacos have 896 milligrams of salt, and 31 grams of carbohydrates. Carbs convert to sugar, and sugar converts to body fat. Too much salt can increase the risk of stomach cancer, high blood pressure, and heart failure. Recess has gotten shorter for years, and extra PE won’t help if we get Alfredo afterward.

On top of all that, childhood obesity leads to a roller coaster of medical problems, like heart disease and heart attacks, type two diabetes, bone diseases, as well as joint diseases. To think that all of this could have been avoided if we got healthier school lunches.

This is why we need healthier school lunches. No parent wishes a heart attack on their child, so we need to change. We need more nutritious school lunches to sustain the health of all children.
